Laughing Gas for Dental Sedation Washington DC

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas that can be breathed in to reduce anxiety.

Nitrous oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years and is safe and effective for professional use. The patient can breathe on their own and remains in control of their body.

The patient may experience mild amnesia and may fall asleep, not remembering all of what happened during their appointment.

There are many advantages to using laughing gas

  • The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
  • There is no after effect, such as a “hangover.”
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs.
  • Inhalation sedation is beneficial in minimizing gagging during a procedure.
  • It works rapidly as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds. In as little as 2-3 minutes, its relaxation and pain-reducing properties develop.

Reasons to Not Use Laughing Gas

You should not utilize nitrous oxide if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Though there are no other major contraindications to using laughing gas, you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., cold, or other difficulties with breathing.

You may want to ask your dentist for a “five-minute trial” to see how you feel about this type of sedation method before proceeding. Learn about our bad breath treatment.

I’ve gone to these dentists for over 20 years. They are great. They have diagnosed problems I didn’t know I had; they never push unnecessary work; I am always seen on time. And everyone who works there is friendly and easy to deal with.
