Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry Front Office

Washington, DC – Dec. 1, 2020.  The Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry provides quality dental veneers and welcomes new patients in the District and suburban Maryland. For those who have chipped, crooked, or discolored teeth and want a more conservative solution than crowns, then the Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry’s dental veneer services may be the answer.

What Are Veneers and How Can They Help?

Veneers are incredibly thin shells made from porcelain, ceramic, or resin that bond to the front of a tooth to change its color, size, or shape. Cosmetic dentists use them to fix crooked or stained teeth, repair broken ones, and shorten gaps. New technologies make it easier than ever to create a custom veneer to bond onto the front of teeth, masking their imperfections.

This process is more conservative than using a crown and has become very popular in treating various problems, such as teeth discolored by coffee or smoking. Veneers are also a great option if past dental procedures have caused irregularities or blemishes in one’s teeth. The porcelain laminates provide a more natural look by mimicking the reflection of real teeth.

The dental team at the Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry only uses the highest quality materials in their laminates and bonding so that the veneers they install can function for more than a decade with regular care.

Perfect, Natural-Looking Teeth in Three Easy Steps

The team at the Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry explains that they can help a patient obtain a shiny new smile through veneers in only three appointments.

  • Diagnosis and Planning: At the first appointment, the dentist will discuss what the patient wants to achieve with veneers and determine if attaching veneers would be the appropriate service, providing alternatives as needed. After deciding how many teeth to treat at once, the dental team takes X-rays and impressions of the patient’s teeth.
  • Preparation: The second appointment takes a few hours to prepare the teeth for veneers. To make room for the veneer, the dentist removes less than half a millimeter of enamel from the tooth’s front. Next, team members take additional molds of the patient’s teeth, which they send to the laboratory that constructs the veneers. The labwork takes between two to four weeks. The dentist may install a temporary veneer for an additional cost.
  • Bonding: Before attaching the veneer, the dentist makes sure that the shape, size, and color are suitable then makes any necessary final adjustments. Next, the dental team polishes and etches the patient’s teeth to strengthen the bonding, and then they apply dental cement hardened by a special light beam. After removing excess adhesive, the dentist will test the patient’s bite to ensure that the veneer is a perfect fit.

After the installation of dental veneers, a patient only needs one last follow-up appointment to ensure correct placement and continued gum health. Maintaining veneers from then on is as simple as continuing proper preventative care such as daily brushing and flossing.

As the world navigates these unprecedented times, Dr. Michael Pollowitz & Dr. Sharon Brown and the expert staff at the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry takes pride in offering safe dental care to their patients.

In compliance with recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the American Dental Association (ADA), the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is using new protocols to ensure the safety of both patients and staff.

Regardless of a public health crisis, a clean, sanitary environment is the norm for all medical facilities. However, to ensure peace of mind for every patient, the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is cleaning and sanitizing their facility more frequently and has added new policies regarding social distancing and wearing masks.

Safer With Social Distancing

The Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry has rearranged their waiting room so that chairs are farther apart. They are also scheduling more time between appointments to reduce the number of people in the building at any given time.

If family members accompany a patient, they are allowed entry to the dental practice in limited numbers and may be requested to wait in the car.

Patients are required to wear masks to enter the building. Staff members are also required to wear a mask at all times, plus a face shield and protective eyewear during the appointment. The front desk is now fitted with a plastic safety barrier to further reduce the potential transmission of disease.

Frequent Cleaning Reduces Disease

Although the team at the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry has always taken pride in the cleanliness of their facilities, they have increased the amount of cleaning and sanitizing that takes place each day.

All high-contact surfaces are now cleaned multiple times daily with hospital-grade disinfectant, and there are medical-grade HEPA air purifiers installed throughout the building. Additionally, germicidal disinfectant fogging is used to thoroughly clean hard-to-reach areas.

Upon entering the building, each patient will receive a supply of disinfectant wipes to use throughout their visit. In the examination room, patients are required to rinse with a hydrogen peroxide solution before receiving treatment in compliance with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements.

Careful Monitoring of Symptoms Ensures a Safe Visit

The Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is taking a proactive approach to monitoring symptoms in patients and staff members alike. Each patient is screened for symptoms with a short questionnaire.

This questionnaire is repeated at the office prior to the appointment to ensure that no new symptoms have appeared, and the patient’s temperature is taken.

Staff members receive a short health examination and have their temperature checked twice each day to make sure they are symptom-free. The Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is committed to staying up to date on all federal health regulations and incorporating them into their practice.

At the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we are known for our state-of-the-art technology to provide outstanding dental care. But, as advanced as our technology is, our dentists are what really makes our practice excellent.

Dr. Sharon Brown is one of the leading dentists in the entire District of Columbia. With over thirty years of experience, she’s seen just about every case imaginable.

Dr. Brown’s Experience

Born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Brown knew that she wanted to help people from an early age. Dentistry provided an excellent way to do so. She attended Brandeis University and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry.

She served out her residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, before joining a private practice. She worked in North Branford, CT, before moving to Washington, DC in 1990.

Dr. Brown adamantly believes that every patient deserves outstanding care. Her patients describe her as compassionate, caring, and highly skilled. She never misses a chance to improve her techniques and keeps a keen eye on new developments in the field.

She works with her husband, Dr. Pollowitz, at the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry.

She is currently a member of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity, the Maimonides Dental Society, and the Greater Washington Academy of Women Dentists.

Dr. Brown’s Private Life

She’s a busy lady in the practice and out of it. With two dentists in the family, the schedule can sometimes be very hectic.

Her children are now all grown, so she knows what empty nest syndrome is like. She is also an active member of the Women of Reform Judaism and Alpha Omega.

She serves on the board of the Women of Washington Hebrew Congregation. While she doesn’t have a lot of free time, she makes it a point to play Mah Jong at least once a week.

Her passions include traveling and cooking. She plans to travel extensively once she and her husband retire. That day, though, is a long way off. Dr. Brown enjoys her work and can’t imagine stopping it anytime soon.

In the meantime, she settles for cooking exotic meals. She’s an excellent cook and loves nothing better than to prepare a meal for her family and friends.

Extremely focused on staying fit, she spends time at the gym each day. She believes in helping her patients to stay as healthy as possible and thus works hard to set a good example for them.

"My favorite dentist. Dr. Brown is hands down my favorite dentist. Highly skilled, fantastic bedside (chair side?) manner and a great team of skilled techs. Dr. Brown thoroughly explains proposed treatment, and keeps you informed the entire way. Her husband, Dr. Polowitz, is also great. Our whole family sees them."

Bill S.

"Dr. Brown and Pollowitz are highly skilled dentists, very talented artists, and have the best bedside or should I say "chair side" manner I have ever experienced. I trust them completely and have been seeing Dr. Brown and Pollowitz for almost 20 years now. When I lived out of town for two years, the dentist I saw there was amazed at the skill and perfection of the veneer and implant Dr Brown did and got the whole staff to come look at my mouth! I had an accident when I was a kid and have had lots of problems with my teeth ever since, and that includes many unpleasant experiences, but their kindness has given me a renewed respect and love for dentistry. It means a lot that Dr Brown will call me and find out if I am OK after a crown or something painful. She knows I am sensitive and takes time to take extra good care. Love them both."

Jenny L.

"As always my experience was top notch for a dental appointment. Dr Pollowitz explained the details of what he was going to do as he worked. It was an appointment to both replace a filling and to take care of the cavity on the outside of that filling. He proceeded slowly and there was never any feel of him rushing to get to the next patient. And Sylvia was very professional as always. Rate this office as a 5 star!"
