Many patients are hesitant when it comes to needing braces. They would prefer to live with crooked teeth rather than face the discomfort and social awkwardness. For these patients, clear aligners may prove an effective alternative.

Conveniently located along the Maryland and DC border, the Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry offers Invisalign in Washington DC.

What Is Invisalign?

Whether you’re looking to get Invisalign in Maryland or DC, the treatment will be the same  – clear braces. The difference between clear aligners and traditional braces extends well beyond the name.

The clear braces are tailor-made trays that cradle the teeth. Like traditional braces, they realign the teeth by exerting pressure on them. Dentists bond braces to the enamel of the teeth, whereas patients may remove Invisalign. There are no wires or elastics, and the trays are clear acrylic.

How It Works

The dentist takes detailed pictures of the mouth to produce a series of high-resolution images. These images allow them to input highly accurate measurements into specialized software.

The dentist completes the process by inputting the patient’s goals. The computer then has the starting point from which to work and a target.

The software establishes a plan for how best to achieve the required adjustment in a series of steps. It creates several designs for finely calibrated aligners, each with incremental improvements in tooth position.

The number of trays used depends on the level of adjustment. Patients typically require between twelve and forty-eight trays.

The patient wears each tray for two weeks: Any faster would cause too much discomfort and render the process ineffective. The patient keeps the trays in for at least twenty-two hours a day.

Patients remove the aligners when eating and cleaning their teeth. Good dental hygiene is critical as trapped food particles lead to plaque buildup and bacteria growth.

Why Choose Invisalign?

Aside from the aesthetic benefits, Invisalign:

  • Is more comfortable to wear than traditional braces
  • Is gentler on the teeth and gums
  • Makes it easier to maintain good oral hygiene

Does the System Work for Everyone?

For this treatment to be effective, the patient’s teeth must be reasonably healthy. Patients with extremely crooked teeth or who have several missing teeth may not benefit from this system.

Finally, Invisalign does require some commitment from the wearer. Young patients may not understand the importance of keeping the trays in for the recommended time. They may forget to put the aligners back in after eating or may misplace them.

Traditional braces are a better option for patients with severe misalignment issues and patients prone to forgetfulness.

As the world navigates these unprecedented times, Dr. Michael Pollowitz & Dr. Sharon Brown and the expert staff at the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry takes pride in offering safe dental care to their patients.

In compliance with recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the American Dental Association (ADA), the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is using new protocols to ensure the safety of both patients and staff.

Regardless of a public health crisis, a clean, sanitary environment is the norm for all medical facilities. However, to ensure peace of mind for every patient, the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is cleaning and sanitizing their facility more frequently and has added new policies regarding social distancing and wearing masks.

Safer With Social Distancing

The Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry has rearranged their waiting room so that chairs are farther apart. They are also scheduling more time between appointments to reduce the number of people in the building at any given time.

If family members accompany a patient, they are allowed entry to the dental practice in limited numbers and may be requested to wait in the car.

Patients are required to wear masks to enter the building. Staff members are also required to wear a mask at all times, plus a face shield and protective eyewear during the appointment. The front desk is now fitted with a plastic safety barrier to further reduce the potential transmission of disease.

Frequent Cleaning Reduces Disease

Although the team at the Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry has always taken pride in the cleanliness of their facilities, they have increased the amount of cleaning and sanitizing that takes place each day.

All high-contact surfaces are now cleaned multiple times daily with hospital-grade disinfectant, and there are medical-grade HEPA air purifiers installed throughout the building. Additionally, germicidal disinfectant fogging is used to thoroughly clean hard-to-reach areas.

Upon entering the building, each patient will receive a supply of disinfectant wipes to use throughout their visit. In the examination room, patients are required to rinse with a hydrogen peroxide solution before receiving treatment in compliance with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirements.

Careful Monitoring of Symptoms Ensures a Safe Visit

The Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is taking a proactive approach to monitoring symptoms in patients and staff members alike. Each patient is screened for symptoms with a short questionnaire.

This questionnaire is repeated at the office prior to the appointment to ensure that no new symptoms have appeared, and the patient’s temperature is taken.

Staff members receive a short health examination and have their temperature checked twice each day to make sure they are symptom-free. The Washington Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is committed to staying up to date on all federal health regulations and incorporating them into their practice.

Highly Reviewed Dentists, Dr. Michael Pollowitz & Dr. Sharon Brown Offer Beautiful Smiles with Teeth Whitening in Washington, DC

Washington Center For Cosmetic & Family Dentistry GMB Post Picture

Patients with yellowed or stained teeth often feel self-conscious about the situation. It causes them to smile less and withdraw socially, feeling less approachable and sometimes appearing less friendly to those around them.

That’s when teeth whitening services extend beyond the realm of purely cosmetic treatments.

At the Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, nothing is more satisfying than seeing the patient’s face light up after another successful treatment.

The Root of Discoloration

Poor dental hygiene isn’t the only cause of stained teeth—it is only one of the myriad possible causes. Patients might also experience discoloration due to:

  • Food and drinks
  • Thinning of the enamel
  • Smoking
  • Chronic medication
  • Trauma

The first stage in a patient’s treatment plan is to establish the cause of discoloration. Without doing so, it’s challenging to suggest the right course of treatment.

If the enamel is stained, patients need more than simple home whitening treatments to counteract the effects. If the problem is related to thinning enamel, harsh bleaching treatments will do more harm than good, for example.

Patients should book a consultation for professional advice before embarking on any treatment options. Home whitening kits don’t contain enough bleaching agents to remove anything more than surface stains, at best. It is not uncommon for patients to be disappointed with the results of these home treatments, so why not call in our professionals?

Under the care of an experienced dental practitioner, patients will find better results quickly and safely. The team at the Washington Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry will evaluate the condition of the teeth and assess whether the patient is a good candidate for the whitening treatment.

What are the Different Techniques Used?

There are two treatments offered–Zoom In-House treatment and Custom Bleaching Trays.

Zoom In-House Treatment

This highly effective treatment produces dramatic results in a short period. The teeth and gums must be in reasonably good condition, though.

The dentist first covers the gums with a protective gel, then applies a whitening solution to the teeth. Finally, they expose the teeth to the Zoom Light for enhancement.

Custom Bleaching Trays

Not all stains are serious enough to warrant the Zoom In-House treatment. The dentist will instead create an impression of the teeth, creating a mold that serves as a base for custom bleaching trays.

The option costs a little more than over-the-counter kits, but the results are far superior. The custom trays ensure that the bleaching agent comes into optimal contact with the teeth and works more effectively.

For patients on a tight budget, these treatments offer comparable results to the Zoom options. The trade-off is that it takes somewhat longer and involves a bit more effort.

For that perfect smile, the effort is worthwhile.

Dr. Brown’s Experience

Born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Brown knew that she wanted to help people from an early age. Dentistry provided an excellent way to do so. She attended Brandeis University and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry.

She served out her residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, before joining a private practice. She worked in North Branford, CT, before moving to Washington, DC in 1990.

Dr. Brown adamantly believes that every patient deserves outstanding care. Her patients describe her as compassionate, caring, and highly skilled. She never misses a chance to improve her techniques and keeps a keen eye on new developments in the field.

Dr. Brown’s Private Life

She’s a busy lady in the practice and out of it. With two dentists in the family, the schedule can sometimes be very hectic.

Her children are now all grown, so she knows what empty nest syndrome is like. She is also an active member of the Women of Reform Judaism and Alpha Omega.

She serves on the board of the Women of Washington Hebrew Congregation. While she doesn’t have a lot of free time, she makes it a point to play Mah Jong at least once a week.

Her passions include traveling and cooking. She plans to travel extensively once she and her husband retire. That day, though, is a long way off. Dr. Brown enjoys her work and can’t imagine stopping it anytime soon.

In the meantime, she settles for cooking exotic meals. She’s an excellent cook and loves nothing better than to prepare a meal for her family and friends.

Extremely focused on staying fit, she spends time at the gym each day. She believes in helping her patients to stay as healthy as possible and thus works hard to set a good example for them.

More than 1,400 5-Star Reviews

"My favorite dentist. Dr. Brown is hands down my favorite dentist. Highly skilled, fantastic bedside (chair side?) manner and a great team of skilled techs. Dr. Brown thoroughly explains proposed treatment, and keeps you informed the entire way. Her husband, Dr. Polowitz, is also great. Our whole family sees them."

Bill S.

"Dr. Brown and Pollowitz are highly skilled dentists, very talented artists, and have the best bedside or should I say "chair side" manner I have ever experienced. I trust them completely and have been seeing Dr. Brown and Pollowitz for almost 20 years now. When I lived out of town for two years, the dentist I saw there was amazed at the skill and perfection of the veneer and implant Dr Brown did and got the whole staff to come look at my mouth! I had an accident when I was a kid and have had lots of problems with my teeth ever since, and that includes many unpleasant experiences, but their kindness has given me a renewed respect and love for dentistry. It means a lot that Dr Brown will call me and find out if I am OK after a crown or something painful. She knows I am sensitive and takes time to take extra good care. Love them both."

Jenny L.

"As always my experience was top notch for a dental appointment. Dr Pollowitz explained the details of what he was going to do as he worked. It was an appointment to both replace a filling and to take care of the cavity on the outside of that filling. He proceeded slowly and there was never any feel of him rushing to get to the next patient. And Sylvia was very professional as always. Rate this office as a 5 star!"
