Losing a tooth or multiple teeth can put a person into an embarrassing situation especially when it falls off or slip in the mouth. These situations can be prevented by having a tooth replacement.

At Washington Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, we provide Dentures to offer a noticeable change to our patient’s appearance when multiple teeth are missing or failing.

Facts about Dentures

  • In the 1800s, people in England who had false teeth ate inside their bedrooms before any events or gathering that includes eating. The practice prevents and protects them from being embarrassed if their false teeth fail them and slip off.
  • In the British Isles, Dentures were common wedding gifts. Many of the people from the place expected to lose all their teeth eventually, so instead of waiting, the teeth have to be extracted at an early age.
  • Worn down and stained dentures make the wearer look older and would cause the denture to function poorly. Better have the dentures regularly checked and stabilized by a professional.
  • Dentures should be brushed both inside and out every day with the use of a soft denture toothbrush and round-ended bristles. Prostheses should be cleaned to avoid bacteria from being trapped beneath the clasps and decrease the risk of tooth decay. Just like the natural teeth, dentures must be well-maintained as well.
  • Soaking the Dentures overnight can kill 99.9% of bacteria that is housed by the prosthesis. Denture wearers do not often pay attention to what type of dentures they will have and end up buying the least expensive and the fastest one.
  • Drugs affect the denture wearability and fit. Some medications reduce the flow of saliva in the mouth which makes it hard for the wearer to swallow or chew foods. Aside from that, reduced flow of saliva affects the freshness of breath and cleanliness of the mouth because saliva helps in removing leftover food particles and bacteria from the mouth.
  • In the 1960s, Francis Wharton, a Canadian woodsman made a full set of upper teeth from the wild. He found himself killing a deer and took its teeth. He filed the deer’s teeth to create a human-like teeth appearance and using a plastic wood and household cement; he implanted the teeth of the deer into his own.  Francis Wharton was known to be “The Backwoods Wizard” and believed by many that he ate the deer using the teeth from the animal itself.
  • Back in the 18th century, the material used for making and crafting dentures was Ivory from walrus, elephant, and even hippopotamus. The hippopotamus’ ivory was priced compared to others; for it was denser and more durable than others. The only downside of the ivory was the difficulty in cleaning, has an unpleasant smell over time.
  • In 2010, researchers unearthed the Guinigi family tomb and had found a mess of human remains including an example of false teeth from the Renaissance era. The dentures strung five human teeth together using a strip of gold metal so that it will adhere to the lower jaw. It was estimated to have been made between the 14th and 17th century. It merely tells that there is no better way to replace human teeth than other human teeth.

Dentures have been an option ever since. These facts proved how vital the teeth are in performing several functions such as eating, chewing, and even speaking. That is why dentures, like the human teeth, must be well-taken care.
