Causes of Gum Disease

  • Poor Oral Hygiene

Poor dental practice causes bacteria and plaque build up in the mouth. The plaque may develop into tar if not removed and affect tissues causing gum infection.

  • Smoking

Cigarette contains a lot of harmful chemicals. Aside from being the cause of bad breath, smoke can leave residues that could cause bacterias to develop.

  • Hormonal changes

Women experience hormonal change during menstruation, pregnancy and menopausal. When hormones fluctuate, the blood flow to the gum changes and affects the way tissue reacts with the plaque causing irritation, swelling, and infection.

  • Dry Mouth

Saliva is the natural bacteria terminator of the mouth. Without saliva, bacteria can’t be washed out and can cause gum disease.

  • Illness (Diabetes)

Some health issues could lead to weakened immunity making the gums prone to infection. Medications used to treat these conditions can also increase the risk for gum infection.

  • Genes

Gum disease can be hereditary; if either or both parents have gum disease, their child would likely have gum disease as well.

Refrain from eating high-sugary food to prevent high glucose in saliva that can cause bacteria and dental decay.

Drinking plenty of water keeps the mouth hydrated preventing dry mouth and increases salivary flow that can wash out bacteria.

Dental visits are essential for the monitoring of the progress of the disease. It will allow the dentist to gather information that will be needed for the formulation of the treatment plan.
