The Purpose of Dental Sealants and Its Application – Washington, DC

Cavities are one of the main culprits of several oral complications. The bacteria that reside in the mouth, on the other hand, is the primary reason why cavities take place.

It is clear that bacteria should not be given any access on the teeth to prevent any issues from forming. Patients may have this question in their minds, β€œIs there any way to prevent harmful substances from settling on the teeth?”. Yes, there is, and we at Washington Center for Cosmetic Dentistry got everyone covered!

We offer dental sealants to our patients who want to take preventive measures regarding their oral health care. Dental sealants are a thin, plastic coating placed on the teeth which are most vulnerable to cavities β€” for instance, the molars and premolars. These teeth are more likely to suffer from dental caries because of the deep and narrow pits that are on the chewing surfaces. Although brushing, flossing, and rinsing can get rid of the harmful particles on the mouth, some areas can still be hard to reach, like the pits.

Its structure and location make it the best area in the mouth that can home acid-producing bacteria. This harmful substance, if left unattended, can potentially lead to the development of cavities. Dental sealants work as a barrier that flattens the chewing surfaces to keep bacteria out. It also allows patients the easy access on all the chewing surfaces during brushing to optimize their oral health care practices.

How are Dental Sealants Applied?

Cleaning

To make sure that there will be no underlying problem, a certain dental device will be used to clean the surface of the molars and premolars thoroughly. It is also an important step to ensure the bond of the materials to be placed on the teeth.

Conditioning

After the tooth is dried, an etching solution will be applied to roughen its surface slightly. Not only does it secure the adhesion of the sealant material, but it can also kill bacteria that are on the deep pits.

Etching

The solution will be washed off, and the tooth will be dried. The site where the sealant would be placed should remain dry to make sure that the material will properly bond to the teeth. In a case where saliva enters the site, the etching process will be repeated.

Application

The dentist will apply the sealant material which is liquid in nature using a small brush. The fluid then freely flow under the pits to occupy any open spaces. Dentists carefully apply the solution without filling the surface to not disrupt normal chewing.

Curing

As soon as the sealant is applied correctly, a special light can be used to hasten the hardening process. It is also possible for the material to harden by itself but it would take longer.

Final evaluation

The dentist will then check if there are any adjustments needed. The occlusions of the patient will be examined to make sure that the sealant would not cause it to change.
